Top Moving Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

February 15, 2019Q's MovingMoving

Moving is an incredibly stressful time. Between the money you’re spending on a new place and updated furniture, moving costs can get quite high. If you have a lot of stuff or if you’re going a long distance, that can inflate the price further. In addition to the difficult subject of money, there’s the actual logistics of putting items into boxes. Obtaining packing materials, sorting through your stuff, and deciding what goes where adds to the strenuous moment. But moving doesn’t have to be a terrible experience. With some precautions and organization, you can make your transfer smooth and straightforward.

Avoid These 6 Mistakes When Moving

Everyone has to move at some point in their lives. To make sure your moving experience is as simple as possible, watch out for these six mistakes:

Be cautious – You should be careful of who you trust. A cheap moving company may be too good to be true. And as much as you want to, you can’t always rely on friends. Even if you have great friends, no one likes helping someone move. Make everyone happy and invest in an experienced and reputable moving company to make sure everything arrives safely.

Not getting enough packing material – When you want to save on costs, it can be easy to skimp on bubble wrap, safe boxes, and other packing materials. Don’t. Even if you’re moving across the street, you still want your luggage to get there unscathed. Anything can happen. Bubble wrap keeps your items safe, durable boxes are necessary, so the items inside don’t break, and packing peanuts or paper should keep your electronics from moving around and shattering.

Take inventory – Another mistake people often make is not creating an inventory. This can make unpacking a nightmare when you’re not sure what box has what. It also helps ensure nothing was left behind. Keep a notepad, and quickly jot down everything you’re putting into each box. Leave that note taped to the container.

Essentials – Pack an essentials bag for the first day. It will allow you to relax the first day instead of immediately unpacking. Grab some snacks, water, and your other daily essentials (like toothbrushes!) that will keep you happy during your move and after.

Change mailing address – Make sure your mail follows you. All you have to do is inform the post office where they need to send your letters from a particular date. Technology makes this process super simple: all you have to do is go on the USPS website and forward your messages. It is vital that you call your credit and bank companies and let them know that you’re changing your address on their official records.

Spend a little – With moving, the desire to save some money is understandable. Hiring a professional moving company isn’t that expensive, and they can save you money in the long-run.

Mostly, a successful move requires careful planning ahead of time. Ideally, you start making plans as soon as you’ve signed the lease and know you’re officially going to have to start this process.

Clean Before You Go

It isn’t difficult to accumulate a mountain of household goods over the years. One mistake that people often make is not going through their items and regularly downsizing. This can make moving a nightmare when you realize just how much stuff you need to pack. Instead of bringing everything with you, take the time before you start packing to go through the items and figure out what you need and what you can donate.

Waiting until the moving day to pack and move is a big mistake to avoid. The job can be a whole lot simpler if you take a few weeks before your move-out date to pack. If you can, you should split the move over a few weekends and bring boxes over a little at a time.
