Prepping and Moving Antiques

February 1, 2019Q's MovingMoving

If you’re planning to move, then you’ve likely been worrying about what you’re going to do with those precious and delicate items you own. Things like art, antiques, and other fragile items shouldn’t get tossed into a box like your clothes. While the easiest route would be to hire a professional moving company, it may be prudent to know a few tips on how to pack those specialty items for a successful transport.

Mirrors, Art, And Prints

Unless you don’t happen to care if your art and mirrors are scratched and banged up during the transport, you should consider the following steps to prevent them from being damaged during the trip.

Firstly, you’re going to need heavy-duty picture boxes. It’s best if you kept the original boxes that they came in, but if you tossed them out, then you might want to buy some telescope boxes. These are long and rectangular boxes that come in two pieces and can be quickly joined together to form one box. If your mirror or art piece is enormous, then you may want to consider a crate instead.

Next, you’ll want to wrap the item with Glassine. This smooth paper will protect them against water and grease. It will keep those items safe from stains and damage. Once Glassine has been attached with tape, you should then wrap the piece again with bubble wrap. Add in Styrofoam corner protectors to keep the vulnerable edges safe. When it comes to packing them into the truck, it’s best to keep them upright rather than face-down. Finally, ensure that you don’t pack furniture or other heavy boxes atop them or against them, so the bigger items don’t break the antiques.

Antiques

If the antique is large, like a piece of furniture, it’s a good idea to disassemble it carefully if you can. Then wrap it in bubble wrap–a lot of bubble wrap. Add in further protection by wrapping it in a thick blanket and taping it together. Protect antiques within a wooden crate by taking the wrapped antique and placing it in a wooden container.

One last aspect to consider is to hire a professional moving company. They often have the materials and the expertise to move those specialty items safely and efficiently.
