Neighborhood Spotlight: Flatiron District

December 7, 2018Q's MovingMoving

One of the best neighborhoods that you can find in New York City is the Flatiron District. This region rests between Penn Station and New York University and thus sees heavy traffic from students as well as determined business executives. This area is still considered one of the most popular places for tourists to visit.

Home of the famous Flatiron building (that’s where the neighborhood gets its name), this downtown area boasts sights, restaurants, and shopping. Many restaurateurs set up their flagships within the Flatiron District, hoping to entice both the hungry tourists and the New Yorkers that live in the area. Similarly, nearly every brand has a boutique in this district. Whether you’re just visiting or planning to move to New York City, Flatiron is an excellent place to start.

The Restaurants

One of the best features of the Flatiron District is the sheer number of restaurants. All your NYC staples exist in this vicinity. Start your day with Stumptown Coffee Roasters, which is an excellent alternative to Starbucks. Then, for lunch, don’t be afraid to take a walk around. You’ll notice a mix of high-end dining experiences and cheap and fast eateries. The neighborhood caters to business people as well as students, so you can choose whatever suits the mood. There’s plenty of Vietnamese sandwich shops, Sushi places, and even vegan cafes that won’t kill your wallet.

What to See in Flatiron

Flatiron is a great place to eat, but an even better place to get a feel for the city of New York. If you’re a fan of architecture, you’ll have the itch to spend some time at the actual Flatiron building. After that, take a walk to Madison Square Park, which often hosts art installations and galleries from local and famous artists. Around the park, you’ll notice small gallery spaces that are open to the public. They’re not always crowded, but that means you’ll receive a warm welcome and get a chance to talk to the artists firsthand.

Flatiron is also one of the best places to shop in NYC. Granted, every community in the city has crowds, but this neighborhood is considered more residential than touristy, so you’ll enjoy your time more and receive better service. You’ll find that many companies and brands have their flagship boutiques in this area, so a lot of the shops have beautiful designs, and they’re different from the regular stores.

Like any district in New York, Flatiron has a rich history and more things to do that anyone can ever describe in one article. The best thing to do is to take a walk and find a new favorite place all on your own.
