Moving Tips for Couples

January 18, 2019Q's MovingMovingNo comments

Sometimes a moving experience can be so bad that it can damage a relationship. With stress levels at an all-time high, it’s easy for couples to lash out against one another instead of figuring out the path forward together – even if you’ve moved together several times before. Finding a place and deciding on a date is the easy part. Once both people have to pack, store, and relocate their entire lives to a different home is when the friction starts to hit.

Luckily, if you’re both committed to making the actual process smooth and straightforward, then you should have no problem accomplishing your goal. Whether you’re new at this or not, consider some of these tips to make moving with your partner a little easier.

Delegate and Help Each Other

Communication plays a substantial role in relationships, whether you are at dinner or you’re packing the kitchen into boxes. One of the best things for couples is to delegate an equal number of tasks to both partners. That way, each person feels like they’re not alone during this stressful time, and that someone is genuinely helping them. Once you’ve got your list of things to do for the move, it’s vital that you stick to it because your partner is counting on you.

You can split the tasks up whichever way works for you. You can assign each person a different room to load up so you stay out of each other’s hair. This is an excellent idea if your partner is easily irritated during tedious tasks. Or, you can tackle each room together – one person packages items, one person packs them safely into a box. As long as you both feel the other person is taking on enough tasks, no one feels like they’re doing all the work themselves.

Make Lists

Lists can help everyone remain organized. A checklist can make packing faster and ensures nothing important is left behind. If you put a written inventory in each box, it makes unpacking simpler too. Plus, you’ll have paper proof of who packed each box and what’s in it, eliminating the small arguments that happen when two people are frantically looking for their favorite things.

Hire a Professional Moving Company

The most stressful part is packing, carrying the items to a truck, and getting them into a new house. The best idea for anyone, especially a couple that doesn’t want to stress their relationship is to hire a moving company to perform the tasks instead. You two can go off and explore the new area or treat yourselves and enjoy a relaxing couple’s massage while professionals do the hard work.
