Anyone who’s done it before knows that moving isn’t an effortless endeavor. It can take a toll on any person as there is much to consider. A big move often requires substantial time, energy, and money. However, you can take proactive steps to lighten the load.
Whether you are moving with your children to New York City for the first time or relocating within the city, Q’s Moving Corp has you covered with what you need to know to ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible.
It can be difficult for kids and adults to say goodbye to a place that has been such an integral part of their life for some time. Young children especially may not be able to understand the big picture behind the move. Before moving, take the time to tour the home room-by-room as a family to reminisce on the good times spent there. You may remember something you had forgotten.
Host a ‘Farewell Party’
Hosting a party before the big move is a great way to say goodbye to old friends. Invite neighbors, your children’s friends, and any others who may want to come and visit your residence one last time. This will be a great way for others to receive some closure on your departure and assure that you go out with a final good memory of your previous home. It may feel odd to throw a party for yourself, but don’t worry – it’s completely fine!
Pack an Overnight Bag
It may take a few days to get everything unpacked and settled in once the moving process is complete. We recommend packing an overnight bag for each family member to ensure comfort during this transitional period. A basic overnight bag should at least contain the following: basic toiletries, changes of clothes, pajamas, towels, and chargers. For the kids, you may want to pack a little extra to keep them occupied. This could include their favorite stuffed animal, snacks, toys, books, an iPad, drawing utensils and paper. For babies and toddlers, make sure to pack diapers, wipes, pacifiers, bottles/sippy cups, formula, juice, and food in an accessible bag.
Get the Kids Involved After Moving In
It can take time to adjust to your new surroundings. After finally getting settled in, you and your family will eventually grow into your new neighborhood. Make sure to introduce yourself and your kids to your neighbors and think about scheduling playdates with some of the neighborhood kids.
NYC provides an infinite source of activity. Regardless of your children’s ages, there will certainly be something close to your new residence that will keep them occupied. Consider exploring your area’s local parks for some outdoor exercise, or view exotic animals at the Bronx or Central Park Zoos. After school hobby/athletic clubs are always a great opportunity to make new friends. Give your kids some fun options and let them choose what they want to do!
