Packing for a move can get a little hectic. As you’re moving, you usually take special care of your electronics, dishes, and other memorabilia. For most people, clothing is just as important. You don’t want to end up ruining or damaging your favorite wardrobe items during a move, so make sure you pack them with care!
Keep it stress-free and follow these tips to move your clothes and keep them clean and organized with minimal hassle during your irksome moving process. If you haven’t already, take a look at our recommended tips for a smooth moving day in order to make moving day as painless as possible.
Moving to a new home is the perfect opportunity to get rid of items you no longer wear. If something doesn’t fit, isn’t flattering, and needs repair, don’t take it with you – especially if you haven’t worn it in six months or longer. Clothes that are still in good shape can be donated or sold online or at a garage sale. You can use items that aren’t worth donating as packing material and recycle them after your move.
Your overnight bag should include the clothes you’ll wear during the move, a change of clothes, and items like pajamas and a set of towels that you’ll need before unpacking. Keep this with you on the day of the move, so it doesn’t inadvertently end up in the moving truck.
Pack different types of clothing in different ways. Natural fibers such as cotton can be placed on hangers and zipped into a garment bag if you don’t want them to get wrinkled during the move. You can simply pack other items in boxes. You may also want to organize by season so that you can unpack the things you need right away and store off-season items.
Once you organize your dresser, don’t bother to empty it. Just secure the drawers with stretch wrap, move it with the clothes inside, and you’ll be ready to go once you place it in your new home. Transport clothing that isn’t stored in the dresser in suitcases or use vacuum bags or garbage bags, which will keep your clothes dry and clean. Pack shoes separately so they don’t dirty your garments. Pack your hats, jewelry, and accessories separately.
If you’re going to be storing your clothes for weeks, months, or longer during the moving process, use insect repellent explicitly designed to repel moths, ants, spiders, and other pests. Choose a formula that’s safe to use on fabric to preserve your items and prevent unwanted infestations.
If you like, avoid the stress and let professionals help you pack up all your items. Experienced movers know just how to store and transport your clothes, computers, TVs, and all of your furniture carefully. It never hurts to call in and get a free quote!
